Overview
The St. Ann’s Sexton serves in a seasonal position that works closely with the Rector, other staff and volunteers, supporting the mission of the seasonal parish by providing for the cleanliness, service and event set-ups, and safety of the St. Ann’s buildings and grounds. The Sexton is also responsible for the ongoing maintenance and general upkeep of the Church facilities and grounds performing designated duties and overseeing the work of various contractors. The Sexton works under the supervision of the Rector and the Junior Warden. This is a seasonal position running approximately May to October at approximately 40 hours/week. Regular working days are Thursday-Monday at 167 Ocean Ave. Kennebunkport, ME.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance and Cleaning
- Open and close buildings and grounds on the days appointed by the rector and vestry.
- Inspect and clean sanctuary and outdoor chapel daily as needed unless otherwise told by the Rector or his/her designee. This includes, but is not limited to, such duties as sweeping, dusting, washing windows, minor repairs, changing light bulbs, painting as needed, floor cleaning and related functions.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles regularly.
- Inspect and clean restrooms daily keeping them stocked with paper products and other staple supplies.
- Submit purchase request for supplies when needed.
- Coordinate with designated outside vendors for repair and routine maintenance.
- Perform minor repairs. Update Junior Warden on status of needed repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain carriage house workshop and equipment.
Security
- Open, and coordinate closings with Rector or appointed personnel, and monitor facilities that are open to the public as requested, including lock-up and setting alarm as needed when rector is not in residence.
- See that safety devices such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, defibrillators, and emergency lights are inspected as required. Maintains a log of inspection dates.
- Oversee visitor traffic and report safety and security issues as needed to according to established protocols.
- Serve as on-call contact for after-hours and emergency access when rector is not in residence.
Grounds Keeping
- General clean-up and maintenance of walkways, parking area, entrances, outdoor chapel, and columbarium.
- Perform lawn and garden watering, light garden maintenance, and light pruning.
- Set-up and take-down of traffic control measures as needed.
- Oversee third party landscape services and coordinate vendors to keep lawn, roads and gardens to established standards in advance of services and events.
Worship Service Event Set-up/Break-down Assistance
- Arrive on day of service at the time assigned by the rector.
- Ensure church/outdoor chapel are clean and set up for each service
- Set up parking management equipment and direct congregation parking prior to services
- Assist as needed for set up of outdoor chapel, PA system and organ.
- Set up/breakdown outdoor hospitality facilities as needed.
Wedding, Funeral and Event Responsibilities
- Ensure church/outdoor chapel are clean and set up
- Clean bathrooms before and after wedding ceremonies.
- Clean church for Sunday services after wedding ceremony.
- Ensure columbarium area is swept clean for funerals and interments
Funeral Responsibilities
- Ensure church/outdoor chapel are clean.
- Ensure columbarium area is swept clean.
- Clean bathrooms before and after funeral ceremony.
- Clean church for next service.
Seasonal Responsibilities
- Perform Spring opening and Fall closing activities
- Oversee contractors to startup/shut down facilities
Other
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide special event set up and coverage on a per-event basis.
Working Schedule and Self Care
- This is a seasonal position of approximately 40 hours/week.
- Regular working hours are Thursdays-Monday but should be arranged with the Rector to accommodate occasional added responsibilities without the need to exceed 40 hours per week on a regular basis.
- Worship services are Sundays at 8am and 10am. Weddings are Saturday afternoons with Friday afternoon rehearsals. Occasional additional events are typically Sunday and Thursday evenings.
- The Church is open for 15 weeks from mid-June to late-September with groups opening. Opening and Closing seasonal responsibilities take place prior to and after those dates. The grounds are open to the public from May to October.
Physical Requirements
The position involves work in a wide range of conditions that can be physically demanding. The Sexton must be able to:
- Lift/carry/push weights of 20-40 lbs.
- Climb, crawl, stoop and kneel.
- Tolerate exposure to heat and cold and inclement weather.
- Operate and properly maintain power tools and other equipment.
Personal Qualities Needed
- A self starter capabile of functioning without ongoign oversight.
- Reliability in attendance, partcularly on Sundays, with strong time managment
- Strong interpersonal relational skills, and a positive personal chemistry with co-workers, parishionses and visitors.
- Must be comfortable guiding the work of a wide range of people including contractors and volunteers from the parish.
- Dependability, ability to communicate clearly, and honesty required.
- A positive client service-oriented demeanor is required at all times.
